As the company expanded through both organic growth and acquisitions, maintaining a consistent user experience across multiple healthcare products became increasingly challenging.

Products had evolved independently over many years, resulting in inconsistent UI patterns, duplicated components, fragmented documentation, and different implementation approaches.

To address these challenges, I initiated and led the creation of Hesiod — a cross-platform design system designed to establish a shared design foundation across the organisation. The goal was not simply to standardise interfaces, but to create a scalable system that enables design and engineering teams to build consistent, accessible, and maintainable products together.

The Challenge

The platform consisted of several mature healthcare products across web, desktop, mobile, and specialised healthcare devices.

As the ecosystem grew, maintaining consistency became increasingly difficult.

  • Multiple visual languages
  • Duplicate components
  • Inconsistent interaction patterns
  • No central documentation
  • Limited design-to-development consistency
  • Increased complexity following product acquisitions

The challenge was to create a shared language capable of supporting future growth across the entire platform.

My Role

Product Designer — Design System Lead

I was responsible for:

  • Defining the overall design system architecture
  • Designing foundations, tokens, and reusable components
  • Creating documentation standards
  • Introducing theming and platform support
  • Facilitating workshops and driving adoption across teams
  • Collaborating closely with engineering on implementation

The Solution

  • Design foundations and tokens
  • Reusable component library
  • Platform and theme support
  • Documentation and governance
  • Shared naming conventions
  • Accessibility standards

A strong emphasis on documentation and engineering collaboration ensured the system could scale beyond design files and become part of the implementation process.

Rather than creating another UI library, I designed a scalable system that could support multiple products, brands, platforms, and future growth from a single shared foundation.

A variable-driven architecture enables products to support multiple brands, themes, and platforms while maintaining consistent behaviour and minimising duplication.

Design Leadership

Building a successful design system is as much about people as it is about components.

Alongside the design work, I focused on helping teams adopt the system by facilitating workshops, establishing shared practices, improving collaboration between design and engineering, and creating documentation that made the system easy to understand, contribute to, and scale.

The objective was to build a shared way of designing and building products across the organisation.

Outcome

Hesiod has become the shared foundation for multiple healthcare products across the platform.

The design system enables:

  • Faster product delivery
  • Improved consistency across products
  • Better collaboration between design and engineering
  • Reduced duplication
  • Easier maintenance
  • A scalable foundation for future growth

Confidentiality

Due to commercial confidentiality, product-specific interfaces, workflows, and client information cannot be shared publicly.

This case study focuses on the design system architecture, reusable foundations, documentation, and collaboration practices rather than proprietary product interfaces or business-specific functionality.
